Frequently asked questions.
Does it hurt?
This is the most common question. Acupuncture needles are as thin as a strand of hair and are gently placed. Some points you will not feel at all and others will have a momentary feeling that dissipates after a few seconds. I will go at your preferred pace and sometimes just start out with a few points. One of the aims of acupuncture is to get you into the most relaxed state possible, so I’ll make sure that you’re comfortable. Most people float out of their session feeling euphoric and rested.
How many sessions do I need?
This is dependent on each individual. I’ve had folks have complete relief after one session, but for the most part it takes from 5-10 sessions to see a big shift. The longer that you’ve had the discomfort, the more sessions it may take.
How old do you have to be to get acupuncture?
My own son had acupuncture as young as two and he didn’t even notice that the needle was there! But my youngest acupuncture patient has been 6 years old. Young folks often see their parents or grandparents benefit, and then they choose to try it. I’ve also treated teenagers and, with all of their pressures, there’s no better time to get acupuncture than high school. My oldest patient has been 92. And I’ve seen arthritis pain and even posture improve with acupuncture.
How long is the acupuncture session?
Our initial intake can be as long as 30 minutes, and time getting acupuncture will usually last between 30 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on each individuals preferences. So the first session could be 60 minutes to 2 hours. Subsequent sessions are 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
